Ayam Cemani Kedu

Heritage poultry selected for hardiness, productivity, and temperament.

Description

The Ayam Cemani Kedu is a breed from Java Indonesia, this breed is thought to have been first bred hundreds of years ago, likely around the 12th to 15th century CE (roughly 500-800 years ago). They have a rich history, and culture, spiritual, and religious significance to the Indonesian people. For centuries, Ayam Cemani have been regarded as sacred or mystical birds in Javanese spiritual traditions, often used in ceremonies and rituals because of their striking black color and perceived spiritual energy. Science has proven that fibromelanosis chicken meat has healing properties. The Indonesian Cemani breeders focus on feather types, and a very strong expression of the fibromelanosis gene. The gene strand duplication on micro chromosome 20, which is a complex genomic rearrangement involving the EDN3 (endothelin 3) gene; is the cause for hyperpigmentation of skin and connective tissues. This mutation is believed to have originated from a single chicken, between 8,000 and 10,000 years ago, roughly around the same time humans first domesticated wild jungle fowl in Asia. The Fm mutation is Sakrit, meaning it likely originated from a single bird. Genetic evidence suggests the fibromelanosis gene originated in Asia, most likely in China or Southeast Asia.
